The life and work of Romain Rolland evoked through his writings. His journalistic writings affirming his fight for the defence of freedom and against oppression, despite the opposition they aroused in France, earned him international recognition from those fighting for justice for the oppressed.
His commitment led him to work in Geneva for the International Committee of the Red Cross, to take part in the defence of Captain Dreyfus, to encourage the Russian Revolution in 1917, and to oppose the judicial frame-up during the Reichstag fire in 1933.
His moral conception of human relations permeates his literary work, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1916. His novels, such as “Jean-Christophe”, his essays “Above the fray”, his theatre, his biographies of Beethoven and Michelangelo and his Memoirs bear witness to his confidence in the greatness of Man.
